How does Open book exam differ from Closed book exam?
Closed Book Exams
- Duration: 3h 15m
- Prepare for the exam by studying the subject notes and core reading as well as prescribed articles and material. Bookwork must be memorised and understood to be able to apply knowledge in the exam.
- Bookwork questions/knowledge form part of the exam, as well as application questions.
- Exams are written without having any study material, notes or reference material in the exam. The exam responses are purely from memory and ability to apply knowledge.
- Invigilation is in person (venue) and through live proctoring (virtual).
- Marks are provided for bookwork answers in many cases.
Open Book Exams
- Duration: 3h 15m
- Same preparation as for closed book exam. Memorising and understanding bookwork are very important as open book exams will not allow for time to page through notes for bookwork knowledge. Emphasis is on application of knowledge and ability to use the bookwork appropriately in a given scenario.
- Bookwork is assumed. Key focus is on applying knowledge correctly and providing sensible arguments and answers in context of the scenario.
- ASSA will make additional material available to candidates during the exam. This may include Core reading notes, relevant guidance note or other pre-scribed material. NO online, network, social media or collaboration applications and internet will be allowed. (More details on this in other parts of the FAQs.)
- Invigilation is in person (venue) and through live proctoring (virtual). Invigilators will be instructed that candidates are allowed to reference provided materials during the exam.
- Bookwork answers may not result in a mark. Any bookwork must be applied correctly. No marks for dumping information out of context of the question.
