Important Update: Semester 2 2026 F103 and N311.03E (MDAR) Examinations

To assist candidates with planning for the Semester 2 2026 examination session, ASSA would like to advise members of the following examination updates.

F103 – Virtual Examination

The F103 examination will not be offered as a virtual examination in Semester 2 2026.
Our remote invigilation service provider is unable to support the examination at the scheduled examination time due to a planned system maintenance window. As the F103 examination timetable is coordinated with participating universities, we are unable to amend the examination date or timing without creating significant disruption.

Accordingly, all candidates registered for the F103 examination in Semester 2 2026 will be required to write at an ASSA examination venue.

We appreciate that this may present challenges for a small number of candidates. If you are based internationally, or if there are exceptional circumstances that mean you are unable to reasonably attend an ASSA examination venue, please contact the ASSA Education team at assaadmin@actuarialsociety.org.za as early as possible, and preferably before registering for the examination, so that we can discuss whether any reasonable accommodation may be available.

N311.03E (MDAR) – Examination Updates

Candidates intending to write the N311.03E (Model Documentation Analysis and Reporting) examination in Semester 2 2026 are advised of the following updates.

Permitted Examination Material

From the Semester 2 2026 examination onwards, the approach to permitted examination material for N311.03E (MDAR) will change.

Rather than bringing personal hard-copy course material into the examination, candidates will be provided with the prescribed course material digitally for the duration of the examination.

As a result:

  • ASSA will provide the prescribed course material electronically for all candidates;
  • Candidates writing remotely, or at an ASSA examination venue, will not be permitted to bring personal hard-copy course notes or annotated material into the examination; and
  • Candidates will have access to the prescribed material throughout the examination.

This change has been introduced to strengthen examination integrity.

Virtual Examination Capacity

Virtual registrations for the N311.03E (MDAR) examination will be limited to 20 candidates only going forward. Once this capacity has been reached, no further virtual registrations will be accepted, and candidates wishing to sit the examination will be required to register for a venue-based sitting.

Candidates intending to write remotely are therefore encouraged to register as early as possible.

Candidates writing ASSA-administered examinations remotely are reminded that they must use a laptop only.

The use of any external devices is not permitted, including:

  • External keyboards or mice
  • Additional screens or monitors
  • Any external input or display devices

Desktop computers may not be used under any circumstances.

Candidates must use the laptop’s built-in keyboard and trackpad/mouse for the duration of the examination.

(These requirements apply only to ASSA-administered examinations. Candidates writing IFoA examinations must refer to IFoA guidance.)

Progression Requirements

Candidates are reminded of the progression requirements applicable to the N311.03E (MDAR) examination:

  • Candidates obtaining an FB, FC or FD grade must either attend counselling or retake the tuition course before being permitted to reattempt the examination.
  • Candidates obtaining a No Result or Disqualification outcome must retake the tuition course before being permitted to reattempt the examination.
  • Candidates who have not attempted the examination within three years of their last attempt will be required to retake the tuition course before being permitted to attempt the examination again.

We encourage all candidates intending to write F103 or N311.03E (MDAR) in Semester 2 2026 to familiarise themselves with these arrangements before registering for their examinations.

Should you have any questions regarding these changes, please contact us at assaadmin@actuarialsociety.org.za.
