South Africans in the formal sector face complex financial choices that often require unattainable literacy or costly advice. A major flaw in current retirement planning is the heavy reliance on equity markets, which exposes individuals to complex investment and longevity risks.
Based on a paper for the Australian Actuaries Institute, this session presents a framework for evaluating how the system fails to manage risk. Drawing on market organisation literature and control systems engineering, it advocates alternative approaches, specifically, recognising decision-making heuristics and separating optimisation from stabilisation processes.
Presenter: Anthony Asher, former head of Wits’ actuarial program and current active retirement researcher at UNSW and Chair of PPS Mutual in Australia.

Africa has become a proving ground for some of the world’s most innovative embedded and digital insurance models. Drawing on Inclusivity Solutions’ experience as an infrastructure-as-a-service insurtech operating across multiple African markets, this presentation shares practical lessons on what drives uptake, what fails, and what the data tells us about how low-income consumers engage with insurance delivered through digital and embedded channels. Jeremy Leach, Founder and Executive Director of Inclusivity Solutions, will reflect on the experience around enabling scalable distribution, the critical importance of claims experience in building trust, and what AI is beginning to make possible. The session offers an honest assessment of progress, persistent barriers, and where the next frontier of inclusive insurance on the continent lies.
