Exam Invigilation

Virtual Proctoring:

Candidates who choose to sit their exams remotely are required to use their own PC/laptop with a working webcam and microphone and must ensure that the technical requirements needed are met.

All exams are hosted on the ASSA Exam Platform. Exam question papers are available within the exam on the ASSA Exam Platform only. No hard copies of the papers are allowed.

Virtual candidates will not be allowed to have a dual screen/monitor for examinations, due to the live invigilation constraints (candidates may consider using a larger monitors through their PC but only 1 monitor will be allowed )

All candidate exam answer files are required to be uploaded onto the ASSA Exam Platform within the allotted exam time.

End to end testing is required for each exam registered for.

Online Invigilation – A211 | A213 | A311 | N211 | F100 | B100 | F200 | B200

ASSA remote exams will be invigilated using a well-proven online proctoring service.

Video Room Invigilation –  N311

No software or extensions need to be installed for Video Room Invigilation.  Test exams using Video Room will be available before the exam day and will contain information on how to access Video Room and requirements for video/camera and screen sharing.

Venue Based Invigilation

ASSA exam venues are situated in Cape Town and Johannesburg where candidates are invigilated by in-person invigilators.  Candidates will indicate their venue preference during the exam registration process.

Laptops and software required for the exams will be provided.

All exams are hosted on the ASSA Exam Platform. Exam question papers are available within the exam on the ASSA Exam Platform only. No hard copies of the papers are allowed.

F200/B200 Open Book exam candidates will be provided with a 2nd screen in venue to navigate and view various documents. (NB!  Virtual open book candidates may NOT utilize a second monitor due to invigilation constraints)

Candidate exam answer files are required to be uploaded onto the ASSA Exam Platform within the allotted exam time (except for A211 and A213A exams).

Exam format per subject

A211 is a written, closed-book exam (2 hours).

Virtual Exams:

Candidates must ensure that they have a full clean A4 exam pad to write the exam answers.

Candidates are required to use a cellphone scanning app for scanning their answer script onto the ASSA Exam Platform during the dedicated scanning time at the end of the exam (ASSA guidelines for scanning scripts). Candidates must ensure that they are familiar with the scanning app and how to transfer files between their cellphone and PC and onto the ASSA Exam Platform before the exam day by participating in the test exam process.

Venue Based Exams:

Candidates are not required to make use of a scanning app when writing their exam at the ASSA exam venue. The answer scripts will be handed to the in-person invigilator at the venue.

A213 is a two-paper closed-book exam with a morning (Paper A) and afternoon (Paper B) sitting on the same day.
A213A is a written exam (2 hours).
A213B is a computer-based exam (1½ hours).

Virtual exams:

Candidates must ensure that they have a full clean A4 exam pad to write the exam answers.

Paper A

Candidates are required to use a cellphone scanning app for scanning their answer script onto the ASSA Exam Platform during the dedicated scanning time at the end of the exam (ASSA guidelines for scanning scripts). Candidates must ensure that they are familiar with the scanning app and how to transfer files between their cellphone and PC and onto the ASSA Exam Platform before the exam day by participating in the test exam process.

Paper B

This paper will be a typed exam using an MS Excel template that will be provided for as part of the exam on the ASSA Exam Platform.

Venue Based Exams:

Paper A

Candidates are not required to make use of a scanning app when writing their exam at the ASSA exam venue. The answer scripts will be handed to the in-person invigilator at the venue.

Paper B

This paper will be a typed exam using an MS Excel template that will be provided for as part of the exam on the ASSA Exam Platform.

Exam answer files are required to be uploaded onto the ASSA Exam Platform within the allotted exam time.

A311 is a two-paper, typed, closed-book exam written over two consecutive days.This exam will only be offered as a typed exam on the ASSA Exam Platform. A MS Word template will be provided as part of the exam to download and answer in.

Virtual Exams:

Exam answer files are required to be uploaded onto the ASSA Exam Platform within the allotted exam time.

Venue Based Exams:

N211 is a typed, closed-book exam.

Virtual Exams:

Venue Based Exams:

A Microsoft Word template will be provided for as part of the exam on the ASSA Exam Platform.
Exam answer files are required to be uploaded onto the ASSA Exam Platform within the allotted exam time.

All open book allowed document and information must be uploaded ahead of the exam into the Exam Platform.  Hard copies of documents will be allowed.

Venue candidates will be provided with a second monitor at the venue to assist with viewing multiple documents during the exam.

These are typed, closed book full day exams (8 hours) and are proctored by Fellow invigilators. All answer files are required to be uploaded onto the ASSA Exam Platform within the allotted exam time.

Virtual Exams:

Exams will be monitored via the Video Room invigilation tool. No software or extensions are required for Video Room invigilation. Microsoft Word and Excel templates will be provided for as part of the exam on the ASSA Exam Platform.

Exam answer files are required to be uploaded onto the ASSA Exam Platform within the allotted exam time.

Venue Based Exams:

Exams will be monitored by Fellows at the ASSA exam venues.  Microsoft Word and Excel templates will be provided for as part of the exam on the ASSA Exam Platform.

How do I check at which venue I will be writing my exam?

Check your proof of registration email to confirm whether you are writing at a venue. This information is also found on your exam permit.

How do I correct a mistake I made on my exam registration after the registration period has closed?

Requests to change should be made 3 days before a scheduled exam to check whether your request can be accommodated and will incur a R520 administrative fee. Please contact Jehaan Abrahams, jabrahams@actuarialsociety.org.za.

Can I defer my exam registration from one semester to the next semester?

Unfortunately, you cannot defer your exam registration from one semester to the next. Should you wish to de-register your exam booking, please read the ASSA refund policy on the applicable parameters for a de-registration.

Where do I find my candidate number and is it the same for every exam?

Your candidate number is printed on your exam permit and is unique to every exam registration. The exam permit is made available 2 weeks prior to the exam date. Add your candidate number on your answer scripts before submitting/uploading on the ASSA Exam Platform.

How do I log an exam incident? How do I know if my exam incident should be reported?

I am a virtual candidate. How do I provide a 360 degree view of my exam environment on exam day?

An in-person invigilator will assist you online on the best way to do this. More information is available in the Examity Test-taker Guide.

If I created an Examity profile in a previous semester, do I need to do it again?

No, but you are required to test every semester to refresh on the flow of navigating and any updates since the last time used.  It is essential that you check that your ID document has been uploaded correctly and clearly as ID verification for each exam is required as per the ASSA Online Examination Policy.

Will I need to type my exam paper?

Only A211 and A213 (paper A) candidates will be allowed to write the exam. All other exams will be type-only exams.

Will I have access to the Formulae book (orange book)?

Any Formulae book information, as determined by the Examiner, will be made available online in the ASSA Exam Platform as part of the exam. Candidates may not use their own Formulae and Tables (orange) books.

Will I be able to print my exam paper?

You will not be allowed to print the exam paper. Hard copies of exam papers are NOT permitted. Copy/paste of sections of the questions into the answer blocks or MS Office answer templates will be allowed. You will be allowed to have clean scrap paper with you to make notes on and plan.

What other programs or add-ins must I have on my PC?

Refer to the Online Exam Technology Requirements Document for technical and software requirements for all online exams. (Laptops at ASSA venue-based exams will be equipped and loaded with the correct software.)

All candidates must have an updated Adobe Acrobat – (http://get.adobe.com/reader/) on their PCs and ensure their browser permissions are set to allow the opening of the .pdf in a browser tab.

Candidates must be able to install the browser extension for the invigilation service. Installing and deleting Chrome extensions, remote access and sharing of your PC’s microphone (sound) and camera must be allowed by firewalls – please check with your network administrator before the exam

Where MS Office programs such as MS Word/ Excel/ PowerPoint are required, templates will be provided in the exam to download and use. Candidates may not use their own files.

Will my work’s firewall allow the exam program?

Only Chrome browsers are supported.

Candidates must be able to install the browser extension for the invigilation service. Installing and deleting Chrome extensions, remote access and sharing of your PC’s microphone (sound) and camera must be allowed by firewalls – please check with your network administrator before the exam.

You will access the ASSA Exam Platform through your web interface and must be able to share your screen and upload scripts where applicable.

Ensure you conduct your Test Exam on the same PC and in the same environment where you will be writing your final exam (e.g. if you tested at home ensure you write at home).

I will be writing in an office at my work – is that allowed?

You are allowed to write at your office, however ensure that:

  • You have stable wi-fi connection and your work firewalls do not block connectivity to Examity.
  • Check for sound insulation (noise from your colleagues could be a disturbance and may raise flags during the exam).
  • Clear the whiteboard of any notes and/or remove any notes/posters on the walls. Plan ahead and obtain permission before your exam day.

My exam start time is approaching and my laptop crashed / got stolen / is not the same laptop that I tested on. What do I do?

Are additional (dual screen) or larger monitors allowed?

No dual screens are allowed. The proctoring service does not allow additional devices attached to your PC ports.

Make use of the “Test my equipment” link within the proctoring service to test your PC set up and ensure you take part in the Test Exams that will be set up for all subjects making us of virtual invigilation.

If you are using a larger monitor, your laptop monitor must be closed at all times. Describe this laptop setup through the online incident management platform.

Will I be allowed a bathroom break during the exam?

Candidates are not allowed to leave their desk during the exam as this will be flagged as an incident by the proctoring service. If a bathroom break is required, candidates should announce out loud when they leave and when they return.

Must I stay connected to the internet with my webcam and microphone for the entire exam time?

Yes, you have to maintain connectivity for the full duration of the exam. Internet connectivity is required to access the ASSA Exam Platform. Invigilation is mandatory for the full duration of all examinations. Therefore, the online proctoring service will require access to your webcam and microphone for the duration of the exam. Significant bandwidth is required to record a full 3-hour exam.

I experienced unscheduled loadshedding and lost connectivity for a while during the exam. What should I do?

If you experience a loss in connectivity, reconnect as quickly as possible. No additional time may be provided to candidates who have lost time due to loss of connectivity. Any loss in connectivity or technology not working properly must be self-reported by the candidate on the ASSA incident form, within 24 hours after the exam has concluded. Invigilation is mandatory for all exams for the full duration of the examination. If you cannot re-connect, call the ASSA office immediately.

If you have any concerns, we strongly recommend that you register to write your exam at an ASSA designated venue.

How will I deal with answers requiring special symbols and characters in the typed exams?

Candidates are encouraged to practise using special characters and symbols (e.g. using Equation Editor) as well as applying it in the Test Exam environment.

How will A211 and A213a scan their handwritten scripts?

Only A211 and A213 (Paper A) will be written exams.

All candidates who are writing these exams VIRTUALLY must install a scanning app on their smartphone. Most iOS and Android phones have a built-in scanning function or you may choose to download a scanning app. You must ensure that you are familiar with the scanning app before the exams, as well as on how to transfer your scanned answer file from your phone to your PC. Where possible select the “low resolution” option to keep your upload file size minimal. Practise this in the Test Exam.

Phones will be OFF during the exam and accessed only within the limited time to scan and upload into the ASSA Exam Platform. Candidates may not write into scanning time and will be flagged if they do so.

The ASSA venue invigilators will scan the candidates’ scripts when the venue exam closes out. No scan and upload time is included for venue candidates.

May I write my candidate number on my A211 / A213a written answer script while I wait for the exam to open?

No, you may not. Candidates must write their candidate number on the top of each page as part of the 2 hours 15 minutes examination time and not before the start of the examination as per the exam instructions. This rule applies to all ASSA exams and not only A211 and A213a.

Are the exams open book exams?

The ASSA exams are currently not open book. However, the F200 / B200 subjects will be going open book from Semester 2 2024.

Are we allowed to make use of spellcheckers such as Grammarly?

The use of Grammarly and Grammarly Premium or similar is not permitted in examinations. The software application should be disabled before the start of any ASSA examination.  Microsoft Word spellcheck is allowed.

Is it necessary to participate in the Test Exam if I have done it in a previous semester?

Yes, it is important as there may be technical updates to our online examinations. A record of your full end-to-end testing is crucial should you experience an incident during your examination in order for the Incident Committee to consider mitigating circumstances.

What happens if I look around during the exam?

The online proctoring system will flag your movements as suspicious.

Why are ASSA’s requirements not aligned with the UK IFOA?

ASSA and the IFOA have different governance structures which determine what the standard requirements for exams will be used.

A1 level exams that are outsourced to the IFoA will be written on their standards and according to their rules.
