Session highlights of the 2021 International Committee:
Africa Seminar |
What has Africa learnt from the pandemic and how should it position itself for the next decade?
With limited news coverage of the pandemic on the African
continent, our panel will seek to provide deeper insights into the
impacts of the pandemic across the continent. The panel consists of the former CEO for Francophone Africa
and current CEO in Uganda of a large insurer, and an economic strategist, and they will develop themes
specifically related to the insurance industry, but will also cover key touch points with the broader economy.
Further, the panel will share their views on the future, such as the “dragon in the room”, as well as how the
industry can best respond to the lingering effects of the pandemic.

Actuarial education
Many African countries still have only a handful of qualified actuaries who are working in the country. Also, are degrees with
actuarial science as a major offered by academic institutions covering the relevant skills for actuaries to be employed and be well
utilised and nurtured for the world of work? What are other methods of support to actuarial students that can enable more students to
qualify as actuaries? These are some of the questions which will be answered. The panel includes speakers from academic institutions
(one is from Makerere University) and those working at / with actuarial societies.

Independent Experts
Many countries have introduced the requirement for an independent expert review; most recently being Namibia, Botswana, Nigeria and
Uganda. These new measures are aimed at instilling confidence in the market by ensuring the independence / removal of
undue influence by the Appointed Actuary. The independent actuary provides insight and perspective on the appropriateness of various
transactions to the Regulator and the Board of the insurer. However, along with these benefits, there are numerous challenges facing
the insurance market when introducing these requirements – these challenges are faced by both the regulators and the insurers.
