2018 GREEN EXHIBITOR AWARD
The Actuarial Society’s Green Exhibitor Award was initiated in 2014 to encourage Convention exhibitors to consider sustainability in their stand strategy and design. The winner receives a trophy as well as a complimentary exhibition stand in a prime position the following year.
Our 2018 winner, SA3, has taken the sustainability brief to heart. It was clearly part of their strategy and planning from the start. They have been a consistent exhibitor at the Convention since 2011.
In their stand design they embrace sustainability concepts such as keeping resources in use for as long as possible, extracting the maximum value from them while in use, and then recovering and regenerating used products and materials at the end of each service life. They re-use their stand dressing, including table cloths and backdrops, simply updating with new décor. They are committed to running down their giveaway stock 100% before ordering new. They are committed to community-sourced products, headed by Lidelle Rheeder, including what you’ve seen on their stand: honey produced by the Kirby family at Nightjar Nature Reserve, biscuits baked by Ouma Madeleine, and potted spekboome from the Gouritz Cluster Biosphere Reserve.
In addition to this, SA3 and in particular Wilhelm De Wet were crucial in the development of the Jakes Gerwel Entrepreneurial School which is firstly a mainstream Technical school to matric, offering Electrical, Mechanical and Civil Technology, secondly a mainstream Agricultural school to matric offering Agricultural Technology, Agricultural Management Practices and Consumer Studies, and thirdly, a School of Skills to NQF1 offering subjects like Food Production, Welding and Maintenance. This is offered in excellent facilities on 18 hectares of vineyard land, state of the art training kitchens, innovative agricultural facilities and cutting edge technical workshops.
Construction began on 19 June 2017 and phases 1,2 and 3 are completed. They will probably start building again in 2 years from now to increase the number of classrooms and workshops and build a school hall.
