What is counselling and how does it work?
A counselling session presents a student with the opportunity to discuss their examination performance with one of the examiners. The primary purpose of student counselling is to provide unsuccessful students with insight into their performance, allowing them to prepare and perform better in future examination sessions.
Who can register for counselling?
Students who have failed their attempt in the recent examination session.
Students who have written an examination with the Actuarial Society of South Africa may apply online for student counselling from the Actuarial Society for the following subjects, F1s (ST) F2s (SA) as well as Modelling, A301 and A302 subjects. To apply for counselling for the UK based subjects e.g. A1s and A2s please refer to the UK website. How do I apply for counselling?
- Notices are sent announcing the opening of the registration period
- Register online according to registration dates provided
- A penalty fee will be charged for late registrations (after online registration closes)
- Register online via your member profile
Are there any fees involved?
A fee is due to be paid once invoices have been issued.
Who are the counsellors?
Counsellors are mainly the examiners of the subject. If an examiner is not available, a marker is usually allocated.
Guidelines issued to the counsellor:
The Education office will receive counselling requests online from students and arrange as follows:
- Inform PE.
- Allocating a counsellor to each student
- Obtaining copies of the student’s exam script, grade and academic report. These will be forwarded to the counsellor.
- Arranging a date for a meeting between the counsellor and student (or provide contact details so that the parties can deal with the arrangements themselves).
- Students will receive an automated invoice for payment.
- Counsellors to submit copy of report, thereafter payment for counselling duties will be made.
The Counselling process involves:
- The counselling session can be either telephonic or face to face. Most students prefer the face to face session.
- Counsellors may not always be in the same geographical area where the student resides. Arrangements can be made with either the student or counsellor.
- A copy of the candidate’s academic record will be provided to the counsellor to indicate number of attempts and subjects passed.
- Arrange for time to meet.
- Make sure copies of all documentations are available.
- Allow about ±1 hour for this session.
- Counselling of students is for the current exams only. No student is allowed to question the counsellor on past attempts.
- Counselling covers reviewing the grade and the exam script. No re marking is required.
- The student’s exam script is assessed to identify the reasons why the student failed the exam.
- A clean copy of the exam script can be used during the counselling session but no copies must be given to the student. Students are not allowed to see their total mark for the paper. At the end of the counselling process the student should be clear on what went wrong in the exam and how/what to improve to pass the next attempt.
- The counsellor should forward a copy of the counselling report to the Education Office for record keeping purposes.
- At the end of the counselling session students are requested to give the Education Office their feedback on how the session was conducted.
