The main activities of the Finance and Banking Committee are described below.

Banking specific activities

To monitor and advise on developments in the Banking field, both locally and abroad including:

  • Legislation and regulation.
    • Basel II Framework.
    • Banking activities, including risk (credit, operation and market), treasury and analytic functions.
  • Financial markets: equities, capital markets (including debt origination, securitisation, syndication and asset backed finance), interest rate markets, credit risk management, structured products, commodities and forex markets.
  • To liaise with other professional bodies on Banking issues e.g. Banking Association of South Africa, South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA).
  • To liaise with the South African Reserve Bank and the Registrar of Banks on issues affecting the banking industry.

Finance specific activities

  • To monitor and advise on developments in the Corporate Finance field, both locally and abroad including:
    • Legislation and regulation
    • Private Equity and Venture Capital Activities
    • Mergers and Acquisition Activities
    • Capital Investment Appraisal
    • Dividend Policy
    • Capital Structure
  • To assist other committees on the application of corporate finance theory in traditional actuarial work.
  • To liaise with other professional bodies on Corporate Finance issues e.g. South Africa Private Equity and Venture Capital Association (SAVCA), Chartered Financial Analysts (CFA), African Venture Capital Association and South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA).
  • To liaise with the finance departments of business schools in South Africa.

Communication activities

Communicate Banking and Finance related topics applicable to the profession, which may take the form of:

  • Sessional meetings.
  • Convention papers and presentations.
  • Information documentation.
  • Seminars.

Education activities

  • To investigate and develop the South African Specialist Technical and Specialist Application syllabus for Banking and Finance.
  • Once developed, to ensure that the syllabus remains current.
  • To assess the applicability and standard of the Fellowship Exams.
