Other Community Activites

 

Members of the Society are involved in a number of community projects and initiatives. The details on how to get involved in any of these projects are listed below. Alternatively members are invited to contact Mallony Jansen or Wim Els to have activities listed on this page.

 

Vrygrond Development

Tony van Ryneveld is involved in developments in the area of Vrygrond, a very poor area near Muizenberg on the Cape Flats, and in nearby Village Heights, an informally developed shack area bordering on the bush. Vrygrond has all the nasty elements of poverty, unemployment, gangs, drugs, alcohol abuse, crowded living and racial tensions.

The Van Rynevelds' involvement has entailed:

  • upgrading libraries and provided books,
  • contributing to the establishment of a primary school,
  • supporting local football club,
  • helping with housing,

Change a Life Trust

Change a Life Trust help fight the causes and symptoms of crime. This is done by:

  • improving crime detection through DNA sampling,
  • trauma counselling for victims of crime and sexual abuse,
  • helping to rehabilitate youngsters in conflict with the law, and
  • inspiring disadvantaged youths to become positive role models in their communities,

St Luke's Tree of Light

St Luke’s Hospice provides Palliative Care to about 760 AIDS and cancer patients on any given day, ensuring that they are comfortable and as pain free as possible. Should you want to contribute, please contact wels@actuarialsociety.org.za

 

The Starfish foundation

The Starfish Foundation was established in response to the tragedy of children being orphaned by HIV/AIDS.  Starfish has delivered support to 53 communities in eight of South Africa’s nine provinces through 20 Non-Governmental Organisations and Community Based Partners projects. These partners enable Starfish to care for over 9000 children, ensuring that their physical, educational, psycho-social and shelter needs are being met. A further 12,500 children receive food support through the same pipeline.

Mfesane/University of the Western Cape Mathematics Enrichment Programme

The Mathematics Enrichment Programme targets disadvantaged students in Crossroads and is reliant on the donor community for funding. For more information please contact Cindy Buske.

 

Limpopo Capacity Building Project

The Open Society Foundation has the following objectives:

  • To provide information and skills to enable civil society organizations (CSOs) to engage strategically in governance processes relating to human rights and development issues.
  • To provide hard skills relating to the effective internal management of CSOs.
  • To assist in the establishment of a mechanism to undertake advocacy work constructively and collectively.
