Professional Matters Board

Chairperson: Neil Savage

Members: Anthony Dienst, Christo Geyer, Stephen Handler, Tobe Hope, Patrick Mayne, Andrew Warren, Ray Welham, Iain Williamson.

Mandate/Objectives: The Board is accountable to Council for the maintenance of appropriate professional standards and guidance amongst the members of the Society and for the implementation of the agreed disciplinary process. In particular, it is accountable for:

• Monitoring and highlighting issues that may impact the reputation of the Society and its members and recommending remedial action where necessary.
• Giving effect to the approved disciplinary process and liaising with the Actuarial Governance Board in this regard.
• Ensuring appropriate communication with members on professional matters.
• Maintaining appropriate guidelines for professional conduct, and ensuring awareness of these guidelines amongst members.
• Providing guidance to the Education & CPD board on professionalism matters to be covered within the education system.
• Ensuring adequate opportunities for CPD relating to professional matters.

The Board will review standards and guidance from time to time in the light of:

• International developments, including, but not limited to, the work of other actuarial associations, including the IAA.
• Changing nature of actuarial work.
• Specific incidents involving professional matters.
• Requests from Council, the AGB and members.

The strong links between members of the Actuarial Society and the UK Profession (“UKAP”) are recognised and the Board will pay close attention, and react accordingly, to developments at the UKAP. The Board will, however, also keep abreast of developments at other actuarial associations, including the IAA, with the aim of ensuring broader international compatibility to the extent possible.

The Professional Conduct Committee will operate within the scope of this Board (as a permanent sub committee), but shall operate independently of the Board. This may be reviewed subject to the views of the Actuarial Governance Board.
