Investments
The objective of the Actuarial Society Investments Committee is to advise the actuarial profession on all matters relating to investments. The following sections relate to the Investments Committee.
The main activities of the Investments Committee include the following:
General Investment Issue
- To monitor and advise on developments in the Investment field, both locally and abroad including:
- legislation and regulation;
- performance measurement and attribution; and
- the valuation of assets.
- To assist other committees on investment related issues, such as the appropriateness of the assets for the liabilities.
- To liaise with other professional bodies on investment issues e.g. The Investment Analysts' Society of South Africa, CFA South Africa.
Indices
- Represent the Actuarial Society on both the FTSE-JSE Index Series and the BEASSA Index Series
- To assess the applicability of the market indices and to ensure the accuracy of the indices in conjunction with the appropriate bodies
- To assess and interpret the rules pertaining to the calculation of these indices.
- To determine the need for further indices and to undertake the necessary research in terms of developing appropriate construction and production methods, and to oversee the implementation and production of these indices.
- To study developments on index construction or to encourage and commission such studies.
Communication
- Communicate investment related topics applicable to the profession to the Actuarial Society, which may take the form of:
o Sessionals
o Convention papers and presentations
o Information documentation
o Seminars
Education
- Ensuring the South African Fellowship syllabus is current
- Facilitating sufficient support for Investments Fellowship students
- Assessing the applicability, difficulty and standard of the Fellowship Exams
