Organisational Structure

The management of the affairs of the Actuarial Society of South Africa vests in a Council, which is elected from among the Fellow members of the organisation. The Council is the decision-making and policy-making body. The President, President-elect and chairmen of the various operational boards form the Executive Committee. The Executive Committee meets with a delegation from the Financial Services Board, being the regulatory authority, at least once a year. This meeting is open to other Council members as well.

Council is responsible for strategic management of the organisation, while the Executive Committee and Operational Boards are responsible for the day-to-day management of the Society's affairs.  There are four Operational Boards: Education and CPD; Operations and Member Services, Professional Matters and the Stakeholder Board. For more information, see "Operational Boards" under "About ASSA".

In addition to the Operational Boards, Council established Practice Area Committees, which are responsible for the technical and research work related to the main practice areas.  These include the AIDS, Continuous Statistical Investigations, Enterprise and Financial Risk, Healthcare, Investments, Life Assurance, Retirement Matters, Research, Short Term Insurance and Social Security Committees. For more information, see "Practice Area Committees" under "About Us".

Council may appoint task teams to look into and report on certain matters from time to time.  Task teams active in 2009 include the Social Security and Retirement Reform and Peer Review Task Teams.

Disciplinary investigations are dealt with by the Professional Conduct Committee and Tribunal.  Non-actuaries serve on both bodies.

External oversight is provided by the Actuarial Governance Board.  This Board operates independently of Council, but has been established in terms of an amendment to the Actuarial Society's Constitution.  In doing this, Council ensured that the Board cannot be dissolved quietly if there is a dispute between the Board and Council.  More information may be found on the page dealing with the Actuarial Governance Board, under "About Us".
