Broad Actuarial Overview

Becoming an Actuary

The future is always uncertain, but as an actuary, you will help make financial sense of it. Mathematical modeling will be a big part of the job so you should have very strong numerical skills. Actuarial science requires an in-depth knowledge of mathematics, statistics, economics, finance and accounting. A number of South African universities offer first degrees with actuarial science and this is the ideal entry into the profession, as success in these degrees will lead to exemptions from a significant part of the professional syllabus.

Actuaries are also professionals who need to use their technical expertise in practical situations. Good communication skills are essential as actuaries often need to explain complex technical information to non-technical audiences, so words are just as important as numbers. As professionals, actuaries also need to display the highest standards of ethics and integrity.

What do I have to pass to qualify?

To become a Fellow Actuary (FASSA), applicants must have passed all the relevant examinations or examination modules (see Fellowship Curriculum) and have completed a learning log showing the acquisition of work-based skills over a three year period. To become an Associate Actuary (AMASSA) applicants must have passed all the relevant examinations or examination modules (see Associate Curriculum) and have completed a learning log showing the acquisition of work-based skills over a one year period.
