Becoming an Actuary

Becoming an Actuary

The future is always uncertain, but as an actuary, you will help make financial sense of it. Mathematical modeling will be a big part of the job so you should have very strong numerical skills. Actuarial science requires an in-depth knowledge of mathematics, statistics, economics, finance and accounting. A number of South African universities offer first degrees with actuarial science and this is the ideal entry into the profession, as success in these degrees will lead to exemptions from a significant part of the professional syllabus.

Actuaries are also professionals who need to use their technical expertise in practical situations. . Good communication skills are essential as actuaries often need to explain complex technical information to non-technical audiences, so words are just as important as numbers. As professionals, actuaries also need to display the highest standards of ethics and integrity.

What do I have to pass to qualify?

To become a Fellow actuary (FASSA), applicants must have passed all the relevant examinations or examination modules (see Fellowship curriculum) and have completed a learning log showing the acquisition of work-based skills over a three year period. To become an Associate actuary (AMASSA) applicants must have passed all the relevant examinations or examination modules (see Associate curriculum) and have completed a learning log showing the acquisition of work-based skills over a one year period.
