Council

The direction and control of the activities of the Actuarial Society in pursuit of its objectives, and the management of its affairs generally, vest in a Council that currently consists of 12 Fellow members and one Student observer member.  Various management functions have been delegated to operational boards, the chairpersons of which serve on Council.

Council members are not remunerated for their work in this capacity. The maximum term of office for a Council member is four years. The President serves a two year term as President.

At the end of each calendar year, at least three Council members retire. The members who retire are those who have been in office the longest, but this does not include the President or the President-elect. Members who retire, but have not completed a four year term of office, are eligible for re-election.

The Council meets at least four times every year. Two of these meetings are held in Gauteng and two in Cape Town.

The first Actuarial Society Council, elected in 1948, were D Spence-Fraser (President), T A Murray (Vice-President), G H Faulding (Honorary Secretary), W Tyler (Honorary Treasurer), D C Kemp, J D Wares, A D Wassenaar and R H Woffindin.

At the 2001 Annual General Meeting, the Constitution was amended to provide for membership of Council of a member who had been admitted as a Fellow not more than three years prior to this person’s election to Council. Provision was also made for the election of a Student member as observer, who can participate in discussions at Council meetings, but may not vote.

Amendments to the Constitution, approved at a special general meeting in 2009, provided for the co-option of not more than two members, as well as an additional observer member.
